Back to School

J.Crew wool baseball hat, James Perse white t-shirtH&M coated jeans, Theory cardigan (thrifted), Charming Charlie quartz necklace, Nike sneakers via Nordstrom Rack (similar)Rebecca Minkoff purse, Michael Kors watch (gift)

This had to be my favorite shoot I've done. I went back to my high school and shot at the school's baseball bleachers. I loved the change of scenery, and I felt like the outfit matched the environment. I'm pretty sure these were the same bleachers they had when I went to school there, so they were a little wobbly... :O This outfit represented new and old finds mixed together to form an elevated basic. Let's explain: A white tee and jeans. Basic. Coated jeans and a tee, not so basic. Mix in a luxe cashmere cardigan (old) with the season's new footwear trend: sneakers (new) and a mix of accessories: hat and necklace (new), watch and bag (old).

Have a great Friday!

Fab Find(s) of The Week: F21

Hooded Denim Jacket
I made a small order to Forever21 the other day mostly filled with the essentials: socks and beanies (where did all of mine go?). But thanks to my new favorite Instagram account f21finds, they do my shopping for me. I don't have to scour through pages of clothes until I find one thing I like, I just go to Instagram. I got this jacket today and I am in LOVE with it. It resembles the popular rag & bone style but for less than $35. I can't wait to wear it around for the rest of winter and through spring!

Faux Suede Slides

I am stoked about these slides I scored for less than $13. Right now they are sold out, but keep a look out for them to come back in stock. I love the neutral shade of blush and grey. I'm sure they will only last through spring and summer, but for the price, I can't complain.

Fashion New Year's Resolutions

I know I've been MIA lately. Luckily we can all blame that November/December Holiday craziness. It's my favorite time of the year, one full month dedicated to eating, watching movies like Elf and Love Actually, eating red velvet brownies (that recipe is coming soon) and for me, Christmas in Maui. As you can imagine, I've been suffering severe post vacation depression.

I don't normally create resolutions for myself, but I feel like if I have them here on paper per se, I can try to keep myself responsible to actually do them!

1. Wear Lipstick - This may seem silly, but I don't vary with my beauty routine hardly ever. A good way to do that is just to change up my lip color. I have a small selection now, but it's a cheaper and fun way to change it up at night, and see what I like.

2. Wear What I Have - This may seem obvious, but finding new ways to wear what I have, instead of throwing away never worn or rarely worn items will make me feel much better after a few years if I know I got my money's worth.

3. Buy Quality not Quantity - This is something I've learned only recently. I used to want to have a LOT of clothes and shoes, and now I'm realizing what a waste it is. I don't wear a majority of it, and then I end of selling it for pennies for what I paid for it. Now when I buy, I only look for pieces that will last. Classic styles (not trends!) in quality fabrics that will stay in style for years.

4. Thrift For Deals - If I ever had the urge to go on a shopping spree or am feeling down (that's when I usually like a shopping-pick-me-up; head to the nearest thrift or buy-sell-trade store. Getting a great deal on designer items is my drug of choice. It's guilt-free too. Don't cut shopping out completely, just be smart about it. I always buy things on markdown or double/triple markdown. One of my favorite finds was a gorgeous silk Rebecca Taylor dress I found for $6!!

5. Don't Impulse Buy - This can also be translated to: Don't just buy it because it is on sale. I spent so much when I worked at J.Crew on cheap items that really added up. These were items that I got for great deals, yes, but maybe not items that fit perfectly, or were the right colors for me. Even if they seem like cheap, simple purchases, think about them. Because they DO add up.

6. Buy Clothes That Fit - This seems a bit obvious, but for some reason, I always buy clothes that are too big. I hate wearing clothes that are too tight because that looks good on no one... Even my co-workers would say things to me when I showed up for work wearing things in the right size. Imagine that. I always tell women to not pay attention to the number on the clothing, but the way it fits. It's well known that different brands vary by size. I could wear a large in Zara but a small or medium at J.Crew. It pays to try on the same item in multiple sizes to get the best fit.

What are your fashion resolutions?

Tomboy

Gap Gingham Shirt, old (similar)Old Navy Skinny JeansConverse Sneakers, Michael Kors Watch, gift, Vintage Louis Vuitton crossbody

All the bits and pieces of this look are definitely wardrobe essentials (I keep adding to that list it seems); a pair of white skinny jeans, white sneakers, a gingham print button up, and a classic cross body bag. This tends to be my work uniform on most days (swap the white denim for blue or black), for its comfort and functionality. I have too many button ups than I care to mention, but every single time I see a cool new plaid print or color palette, I.just.have.to.get.it.
A trick that I like to use, especially on unisex prints like the hugely popular gingham print, check the men's section for a slightly oversize style if the women's sections is sold out. You're welcome. Sometimes the men's section will have even cooler prints anyway. As long as you don't run into a guy at the bar with the same shirt!
Don't you love the new bag to my handbag collection? My lovely boyfriend got it for me for my birthday over the summer, and it's been on heavy rotation.

Have a great Friday!

Fall Essentials: Sweater Dress

This time of the year, although my favorite time of the year, can get tricky to look chic during the cold, rainy months. It's also easy to resort to the same old jeans, boots, sweaters and jackets. And while I do love my shelf of sweaters and cozy coats (I have way too many for the mild climate I live in), sometimes I want to reach for something that is still fall appropriate, but different.
I have seen this pleated sweater dress sported on Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere, and I immediately loved it. I tend to despise traditional sweater dresses. They are never designed right. They only look good on girls that are stick skinny. In that case, I just stay away.
This dress is a little more than I would like to spend, so therefore it's staying on my wishlist and I'll monitor it and see if I can get a good deal after the holidays, or better yet, find something similar.

What is one of your favorite fall looks?

Black & Gold

Lush sheer blouse,  7FAM Roxanne Skinny Jean in Distressed, thrifted (similar), Diane von Furstenberg Wedges via Marshalls, sold out (available on eBay)Conversation Pieces tote, BP Mirrored Sunglasses (RayBan version), Foxsie Co and Forever 21 Rings

I found the most amazing find at my Marshalls store a few weeks back. I always browse the clearance shoes first; and sitting on the very top shelf, these metallic gold wedges caught my eye. When I took them down I couldn't believe they were DVF. And for only $29!! They were technically a half size too small, but this was a "make it work" moment. I looked around me in silence (while my insides were bursting with joy) as if I just swiped the Golden Ticket out from everyone's noses.
I also got a killer deal on my 7FAM jeans, Lush blouse (both from the same Crossroads shopping trip), sunglasses and jewelry. Aside from the tote, every piece was under $30. With all the different ways to get great deals out there, spending retail is just stupid. :)

What has been your ultimate style score?

Prep School

Sunday in Brooklyn Top, J.Crew skirt (similar), vintage Ferragamo flats, thrifted (newer)Michael Kors Clutch, Michael Kors watch (old)

This outfit is definitely outside the box for me. It's very girly, which I tend to put more of an edgy spin to most of my looks. The elements of this look I love individually (the top with ripped skinnies, the skirt with a chunky sweater, and the Ferragamos with well...everything) so putting them all together was a departure for me. I also went au natural in terms of makeup. I don't wear a lot of makeup to begin with; what I wear in my blog posts is what I wear everyday. I'm pretty boring when it comes to my beauty routine. But when I don't feel like doing it all but still look presentable to the general public I'll just put on tinted moisturizer, mascara and lip color. I learned this trick from Julia of Gal Meets Glam and I have been using it for a while.

P.S Everyone have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!!!

Fall Essentials: A Quilted Jacket

Zara Quilted Jacket, similar

I feel like one day it just hit me; "I need a quilted jacket." They've been around forever, but lately the style has strayed from Michelin man, to sleek and more chic. I think the trick is to pick one in a neutral color like black, grey, tan or olive. Also pick details that aren't too trendy, but classic like zipper details or buckles. Anything too over the top will get few uses then stuffed in a donation bag when the trend has moved on.
I found a wonderful olive green quilted coat by Michael Kors at Nordstrom Rack a few weeks back. As soon as I tried it on I fell in love. Don't you wish all your dressing room experiences were more like that?

Printed Romper

H&M Romper, sold out (similar), Old Navy Denim Jacket, old (similar), Ralph Lauren Crossbody Bag, Solesociety Sandals, Michael Kors watch, J.Crew bracelets, Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Polish c/o Influenster

It's been a weird start of the fall season. It hasn't really cooled down yet, except for a few rainy days here and there. In fact, there have probably been more days in the 80's this October than I can ever remember. Because of this funky weather, I'm forced to wear outfits that consist of shorts with sweaters, jeans and t's, and dresses and jackets. It's quite confusing.
Luckily, with something like a romper, to avoid looking like you are wearing a diaper (or an adult onesie), you need something like a jacket to break up the proportions. As much as I love rompers I definitely don't have the right body shape to wear them as-is (think super tall, skinny).
So until the weather decides what it's doing, I guess I get to pull out all my summer stuff and mix it with my favorite fall layers. I guess I'm okay with that. For a little bit....

Fall Essentials: A Red Plaid Top

"Ex Boyfriend" Shirt in Albion Plaid - Madewell
One of the most essential fall items is a plaid shirt. I own about half a dozen in a variety of colors and patterns, but without a doubt, the ones that get the most rotation are a blue /green one and a red/blue one. However, I had to give up my red one last season because I outgrew it (not physically, thankfully) but I held on to it for so long because I love the colors so much. What I love most about red plaid is it pops against any outfit pairings. I love the Madewell shirt above because of the small details. With all the plaid shirts available, you want to stand out. This shirt stands out. I love the little pop of gingham print in the lining and when you roll the cuffs. It's like two plaids for one. I can tell you this, this would be one thing I would keep from my Ex-Boyfriend.... ;)

Where is your perfect plaid from? Send me links! I'm in the market for a new one! :)

Fab Find of The Week: Oversize Plaid Scarf

Oversized Plaid Scarf - Target
So here's the thing. I don't buy accessories like scarves often. I have a handful of them already, and unlike clothing or shoes, the trends for them don't really change much. Just having a good mixture of neutral colors, some brights, and fun patterned scarves in your arsenal and you are good to go for a long time. If you've been on Pinterest lately, or follow any fashion blogger, you are probably very familiar with the oversized plaid scarf. Most originated from ASOS or Zara, but sold out quickly and left girls wanting the popular scarf....like now. Enter Target.
I was already over my budget at Target (5 for $20 underwear, sure. $24 workout pants? Of course) but when I was on my way to check out, this scarf caught my eye. I loved how bright it was, and I snagged the last one. And for $16.99, it's a steal for a trendy item for the season.

Target strikes again.

Jeweled Top

White Raw Edged Jacket - Tildon (as seen on Happily Grey), Jeweled Top - c/o Conversation Pieces, Track Pants - Level 99 via Article Consignment, Metallic Sandals - Renvy via Gilt, Watch - Michael Kors, gift. Handbag - Rebecca Minkoff c/o Privilege Clothing, also available at ShopBop

If you know me, you know I love my sparkly jewels. My necklace collection is filled with J.Crew statement pieces in a variety of shapes, colors and styles. But there is something a little cooler than that; a classic striped t-shirt (another one of my favorite staples) with a built in necklace. I liked pairing the dressed up top with these lyocel track pants and metallic shoes. I could have easily gone with skinny jeans, but I thought the track pants were a cool contrast.
I chose to throw on this AMAZING raw edged jacket at the last minute and I'm glad I did. Not only is it super delicate with the distressing, but the color also makes it a magnet for stains. I am always afraid to wear it, which is stupid! It's such a great modern design.
I pulled out my Rebecca Minkoff bag and I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a new black handbag. It has such great details (the tassels, blue polka dot interior, gold hardware) and it's the perfect handbag - if I ever designed one myself.

What is your favorite embellished clothing item?

The Color block Coat

Colorblock Coat - Nine West (In Navy/Black), Jeans - 7 For All Mankind, thrifted, V-Neck Sweater - J.Crew, Statement Necklace - C/O Conversation Pieces, Ankle Boots - Vince Camuto, (In brown), Sequin Clutch - Gap, thrifted via Article Consignment, Hat - J.Crew Factory

There was one day two weeks ago where it finally felt like fall. So along with the rest of Northern California, I immediately threw on my boots, jeans, sweater and coat. It was amazing. And amazingly short lived. This time of the year is my absolute favorite, I love wearing denim and coats; it's such an easy and fuss-less time of year (I digress, when it's raining, it's very fussy.) I have just now started getting into fall headgear - hats like this wool baseball cap, floppy beanies, and this amazing wool hat by J.Crew I will hopefully get to sport this weekend up in the foothills.
The color block coat was super trendy last season and at the very end of winter I got a gift card to Macy's. I went back and forth about what to use it for since I actually don't shop there much at all. Since I didn't want to splurge on the color block coats J.Crew had at the time, I got away with spending only $40 out of pocket for this Nine West version. They had a few different color combinations but I thought this neutral one would go well with so many different outfits from denim to dresses to leather.

What is one of your favorite outerwear pieces?
